Newcomer, Joshua Cockerill, exceeds expectations
Songwriter starts career with a bang and brings his music to the Apollo

Joshua Cockerill is releasing his new album entitled, The Trick With Your Heart I’m Learning To Do this Tuesday in Toronto and will have it with him in Thunder Bay on Saturday.
What’s impressive about this release, from the 21-year-old Cockerill, is the attention it has garnered before it has even been released.
Exclaim! magazine has stated the album is, “a highly promising beginning.”
Also, fellow Canadian musicians have taken notice, and the album has received glowing accolades from both Serena Ryder and Justin Rutledge.
Although it is still very early in his career, Cockerill has made some powerful allies in the Toronto scene. Cockerill jokingly chalks it up to, “just drinking in the right places you get to meet the right people.”
“When I moved to Toronto from Calgary, Alberta, I knew that I was headed towards possibilities where I could be in a city and run into people I grew up admiring like Ron Sexsmith and Blue Rodeo and once I got here I really stumbled onto people that were like minded to me,” states Cockerill.
Serena Ryder and Justin Rutledge, as well as many other Canadian musicians, appear on the new album on several tracks, and Rutledge has a co-writing credit on the track “Elvis.”
“I was really excited,” Cockerill says on recording with Ryder and Rutledge, “I was kind of overwhelmed by how satisfying of an experience it could be just sitting back and watching these amazing musicians do their work.”
The tour route Cockerill will be taking will actually take him west from Toronto, back to his prairie home, and then back again.
When asked if this was meant to be a “homecoming” tour, Cockerill stated, “the brutally honest reason is because we’re going to be coming on the first few weeks of winter and I think just driving through the mountains would be a little bit too much of a scary adventure.”
The rhythmic folk/country sound found on The Trick With Your Heart I’m Learning To Do is certainly a strong indication of things to expect from the young artist. With strong allies backing Cockerill, Canada can expect to see much more from him in the future.
Thunder Bay is fortunate to witness this artist at the Apollo as he sets out on tour for the first time. Any fans of good alt-country and folk are highly encouraged to attend this show.
